UI Spotlight – An Interface Evolution

Not sure how much this interests anyone but me … however, since my lame-ass guildies have ZERO initiative to contribute :P , I’m taking another shot. I got this idea off of WoW.com and thought it was pretty cool.

I love horking with my interface, changing it up every once in a while and incorporating new features / functionality. After 5+ years of playing, how I operate and what I find useful has evolved. So, I went through my old screenshoots and found a nice visual representation of how it evolved over time.

Here’s one of my real first attempts at modding the interface.  BTW that’s my old Lock getting chased by a ninja Fel Reaver in Hellfire.

What’s you can see is that I’m trying to clear up my screen and get some more viewing space. I stripped out the artwork, but kept pretty much using the default bars and added in X-Perl for the unit frames.

Next up is another of Dauphine, but this time raiding in Karazhan.

Now I’ve started to move all my bars to the center of the screen, some custom raid frames and a different bar mod (Trinity Bars I believe). It’s an improvement, but still cluttered and unorganized. Notice the raid frame and 5-man frame, what a waste.

By the time Pugnus came along I had started to tighten up the UI; removing clutter and redundant garbage.

The UI is definitely in better shape and pretty tight overall, but I still had some work to do. I really didn’t like the buff/debuff frames, too much going on to be useful. I’ve moved on to Shadowed Unit Frames and Bartender by this time. Having a wide-screen monitor(s), I was able to fit almost everyone into the bottom area, maximizing what’s viewable by quite a bit.

And finally, just from today, I’ve come to what might be my final layout.

I finally fixed the annoying buff crap and moved virtually everything to the bottom frame. The buffs/debuffs have been moved to the upper right (using Sabrina Buff Frames). But, I’ve also customized additional buff/debuff info to fit above the Player and Target unit frames. These custom frames only display debuffs or buffs applied by me. This works well, since as a DK, I need to closely watch procs and diseases all the time. What I’m doing doesn’t get lost in the clutter any more.

Grid didn’t cut it for me, so I’m still using Shadowed Unit Frames, but shrunken into a Grid-like format so it can fit at the bottom as well.

Here’s an annotated version if you’re interested.
